Happy Birthday, Viggo Mortensen! The actor, who was born on October 20, 1958 in Manhattan, turns 55 today.

He toiled for years in supporting roles until getting his big break as scruffy but heroic Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" films. He's also become one of David Cronenberg's favorite leading men, starring in three of his films, including "Eastern Promises," for which he received his only Oscar nomination.

The soft-spoken actor is an excellent example of the "still waters run deep," since he's played dozens of characters who don't say much. However, when they take action, watch out.

On the occasion of Mortensen's birthday, we celebrate some of his most badass moments onscreen.
