Monsters, zombies, aliens, evil dolls -- they're frightening, but none come close to being as scary as a psychopathic, cannibalistic serial killer.

The UK-based film and TV streaming service LOVEFiLM polled 2,000 fans who named the sadistic Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs," as the scariest movie villain of all time. He murdered his evil competition with 25 percent of the vote.

"Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise Freddy Krueger came in second at 12 percent, while creepy doll Chucky of the "Child's Play" movies rounded out the top three.

"We all love a good scare, and there's something about the calm demeanor and intelligence of Dr Hannibal Lecter that instantly brings a shiver to the spine," said Fliss Hickson, head of brand marketing at LOVEFiLM.

"The combination of his brilliant brain, murderous appetite and terrifying mind games means this doctor truly is the stuff of nightmares."

We definitely never looked at fava beans the same way again.
