The general approach to the marketing of next month's "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (the second chapter in the "Hobbit" trilogy from original "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson), is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The trailers and other marketing materials in the lead-up to the film have closely mirrored the "Lord of the Rings" materials to an almost eerie degree. And just as we had honey-colored pre-release posters for Frodo, so too do we have them for Bilbo and the gang.
The posters (courtesy of Empire) feature Ian McKellan's Gandalf, Orlando Bloom's Legolas, and some new characters played by Evangeline Lily (ABC's "Lost") and Luke Evans ("Immortals"). Oh, and also Martin Freeman, who stars as the titular hobbit Bilbo. Many of the characters look oddly airbrushed, but that could be the patented "Middle Earth glow."
In "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," Bilbo and his band of wizards and dwarves must make their way through hostile territory to finally face off against the villainous dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, and performed by him too thanks to the magic of performance capture). We should also see some of the threads that will link "The Hobbit" trilogy to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, although most of that will probably come in the third film, which is out next Christmas.
Check out some of the new character posters below. "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," hits theaters on December 13.
