'Batman vs. Superman' May Be Searching For a Wonder WomanGetty

According to Variety, the female lead in "Batman vs. Superman" (or whatever it ends up being called), the highly anticipated "Man of Steel" sequel that will see the Man of Tomorrow face off against The Dark Knight, has been whittled down to three actresses.

Among those who have or will test for the female lead are Gal Gadot, a stunning Israeli actress who appeared in "Fast Five" and "Fast and Furious 6," Elodie Yung, a stunning French actress from David Fincher's "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and Olga Kurylenko, another stunning French actress who appeared in "Quantum of Solace" and "Oblivion." But what do these three actresses have in common, besides their stunning-ness? Well, they all look a whole lot like a DC Comics superstar: Wonder Woman.

While the studio is still towing the line that the actresses are testing for Bruce Wayne's love interest, the casting description of a "tall, brunette, athletic and exotic" woman suggests that the role could be Diana Prince, the Amazonian warrior also known as Wonder Woman. According to the Variety report, there is the distinct possibility that several members of the Justice League could also make appearances in the "Man of Steel" follow-up, including The Flash. What we do know about the film is that Henry Cavill will once again play Superman and Ben Affleck will step into the Cape and Cowl.

Warner Bros. had no comment on the Variety story and the character rumors.

If these other characters do make appearances, it could be the jump-off for Warner Bros. and DC's own version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For whatever reason, a unified cinematic continuum has eluded DC and perhaps a superhero-stuffed "Man of Steel" sequel could be just what the studio needs to get these various franchises going. There's a commercial viable "Thor" franchise for crying out loud, and we don't have a Wonder Woman movie yet? Something is clearly amiss.
