'American Hustle'Sony

If you're going to use a con man in a government sting, then let him be a real con man.

That's what Christian Bale is trying to persuade Bradley Cooper in this exclusive clip from David O. Russell's crime drama "American Hustle."

When FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper, sporting an awesome 'fro) outlines his plans to infiltrate the New Jersey mafia, con man Irving Rosenfeld (Bale, wearing equally ridiculous glasses) accuses him of "getting a little power-drunk" and "ruining America," all just so he can get a promotion.

"You will never do it properly," Irving explains, "because you have too much government attitude to be small and sleek" -- like himself.

Also starring Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, and Robert De Niro, "American Hustle" opens in theaters December 20.
