Weekend Movie Preview The HobbitNew Line

This weekend, Peter Jackson brings us back to Middle-earth in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," Tyler Perry revisits his classic character for the holidays in "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas," and Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson star in the biographical "Saving Mr. Banks."
Picking up where "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" left off, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" finds Thorin Oakenshield, his mighty band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins, and the great Gandalf on their quest to reclaim Erebor -- Oakenshield's former home -- from the dragon Smaug. Directed by Peter Jackson, the film features Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Richard Armitage as Oakenshield, and Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the vicious Smaug. Get ready for a wild (barrel) ride!

In "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas," the titular character unexpectedly finds herself in the country for Christmas after getting coaxed into helping a friend pay her daughter a surprise visit. Despite the rural setting, Madea is still up to her old ways, dishing her own brand of humor and sass just as the small town begins preparing for its annual Christmas Jubilee.

"Saving Mr. Banks" teams up Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks -- both two-time Academy Award-winners -- in the incredible, little-known story of how Disney's classic "Mary Poppins" made it to the big-screen. Thompson plays P.L. Travers, the cantankerous author of the beloved children's book, who has difficulty parting with her magical character, while Hanks portrays the affable, yet insistent Walt Disney. Despite each other's differences, the pair find common ground and come together to bring Travers' story to life.

Also, in limited release this week:
  • "American Hustle" tells the story of a brilliant con man and his female partner, who are forced to work with the FBI and bring down some of New Jersey's most powerful men. The film goes wide December 20th.
  • In "Here Comes the Devil," a couple's young children are feared missing in a desolate mountainside, only to suddenly reappear and start displaying strange and sinister behavior.
  • "The Crash Reel" documents the epic snowboarding rivalry between half-pipe legends Kevin Pearce and Shaun White. In a sad twist, a horrific crash leaves Pearce fighting for his life.
  • In "Some Velvet Morning," Fred (Stanley Tucci) arrives at the doorstep of his beautiful young mistress Velvet (Alice Eve) after years apart, claiming to have finally left his wife.
