King Leonidas (Gerry Butler) bit it at the end of the last "300" and his queen (Lena Headey) is out for blood. Unfortunately for her, the army they're up against is led by Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and Artemisia (Eva Green). Yep, Xerxes and his amazing/terrible facial piercings are back. There's tons of slow-motion fighting, yelling, sweating, and sexiness, all set to the dulcet tunes of Black Sabbath. Nope, they aren't going to subtlety in "300: Rise of an Empire."
Based on the graphic novel "Xerxes" by Frank Miller, this "300" sequel was adapted by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad. Snyder directed the first "300," "Man of Steel," and "Sucker Punch," and is currently hard at work on the as-yet untitled "Batman vs. Superman" movie. He's listed as a producer here, with Noam Murro directing. Murro's only other feature-length credit is "Smart People" with Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker, so suffice it to say that this is a pretty big switch, genre-wise.
"300: Rise of an Empire" opens on March 7, opposite "The Grand Budapest Hotel," which would make a fantastic double feature. No, wait, the opposite of that.
