"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (Criterion)
What's It About? Comedy bigwigs like Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Spencer Tracy, and Jonathan Winters star in this slapstick-y flick about buried treasure.
Why We're IN: Because it's winter and you need a laugh, and because this Criterion edition is restored, extended, and spiffed up in all the right ways.

What's It About? Ken Marino plays a guy who already has a pretty poopy life, and then he discovers he's got a demon living in his guts, to put it politely. Can he keep his murderous gut goblin from killing everyone by becoming buddies with it?
IN or OUT: Fans of horror comedies from the '80s might enjoy this gross-out farce.
"Best Man Down"
What's It About? Jess Weixler ("Teeth") and Justin Long are newlyweds who have to cancel their honeymoon when their bombastic best man suddenly dies, and they have to handle the funeral arrangements. What was behind the façade of the dubiously nicknamed Lumpy? They're about to find out.
IN or OUT: The critics were less than impressed.
What's It About? This action-drama by Paul Greengrass is based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips, played by Tom Hanks, whose ship was taken over by Somali pirates. Newcomer Barkhad Abdi has been getting major kudos and awards buzz for his performance as the head pirate. "Captain Phillips" has been nominated for six Oscars, which ain't too shabby.
IN or OUT: Most definitely in.
What's It About? Shia LaBeouf plays the eponymous Charlie, who finds himself in all sorts of mishegoss while en route to Bucharest, a trip inspired by a vision of his late mother. Evan Rachel Wood co-stars as a babely musician with ties to some seriously dangerous dudes. Rupert Grint, Mads Mikkelsen, and Melissa Leo co-star.
IN or OUT: So very out, and not just because of LaBeouf's latest shenanigans, although those make it hard enough to enjoy his films as it is.
"In a World..."
What's It About? Lake Bell wrote, directed, and stars in this funny indie about a woman trying to break into the voice-over business. Bell takes aim at sexism, "Sexy Baby Voice," and so much more in this smart comedy. Ken Marino, Demetri Martin, Tig Notaro, Rob Corddry, Michaela Watkins, and Fred Melamed round out a strong, funny cast.
IN or OUT: In! Check out Bell's directorial debut, marvel at the cast of comedians, and enjoy Geena Davis's awesome cameo.

"Instructions Not Included"
What's It About? Eugenio Derbez plays a former lothario who turns his life around when he's left to raise a daughter he conceived during a one night stand. Things are actually going pretty well.... Until her mom shows up again.
IN or OUT: Although this got mixed reviews, it made huge bank at the box office with its funny, sweet-hearted vibe.
What's It About? Danny Trejo returns as the eponymous ex-Federale, and this time around the Prez himself wants Machete's help in taking down a serious baddie.
IN or OUT: If the sight of Charlie Sheen doesn't turn your stomach, nothing will.

What's It About? Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon star as a struggling couple who get a taste of hope when Melissa (Watts) gets pregnant. Are they finally going to get a break, some hope, some happiness? It's never that easy.
IN or OUT: Watts and Dillon got good reviews for their performances, but the movie itself didn't wow.

"Cat People" (Collector's Edition) (1982)
What's It About? Nastassja Kinski stars in Paul Schrader's remake of the 1942 black and white horror film, as a woman whose sexual urges transform her into a sexy leopard. Her older brother Paul, who also transforms into a sexy but deadly leopard, is played by Malcolm McDowell. David Bowie sings the theme song. What more do you need to know?
IN or OUT: If you're a fan already, you might want to throw this on your to-buy pile. This collector's edition doesn't seem to wow too much, though.
"The Five Heartbeats"
What's It About? Robert Townsend directed, co-wrote, and stars in this drama/comedy about a Motown-style vocal group called The Five Heartbeats, and why they broke up. Spoiler: They eventually make up when they're much older and reunite!
IN or OUT: This is the first time "The Five Heartbeats" is on Blu-ray, so go for it.
"La Vie de Bohème" (Criterion)
What's It About? Beloved Finnish auteur Aki Kaurismäki's take on "La bohème" is funny and sad and wonderful. This Criterion edition includes a making-of documentary, a fresh transfer supervised by the director, new English subtitles, and an essay by Luc Sante.
IN or OUT: You should be in.
"The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1981)
What's It About? Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange star as lovers who decide to off her husband, snag his dough, and take over his diner. Of course, it's never that easy.
IN or OUT: With an adapted screenplay by David Mamet and these two leads, you'll want in. After all, Lange's run on "American Horror Story" will soon be over.
