Although I'm not quite sure if "phenomenon" is the best word to describe last year's Syfy sensation "Sharknado," a made-for-TV movie where a swirling vortex of aquatic killers terrorized a coastal Californian town, it's as close to Syfy has come to having a genuine smash since the end of "Battlestar Galactica." So it's no surprise that "Sharknado 2: The Second One" will be unleashed to unsuspecting cable subscribers this summer, and, as it was announced today (via Coming Soon), a whole bunch of actors have signed on to become potential shark bait.
The movie, which is set (and will, shockingly, be filmed) in New York City, has added Kelly Osborne, Judd Hirsch, Andy Dick, Judah Friedlander, Vivica A. Fox, and Mark McGarth to the cast. Presumably they will be trying to save the Big Apple from the Sharknado. Osbourne will play a flight attendant, while Dick will play a New York City police officer, and Hirsch will (of course) play a cab driver. They will join original "Sharknado" stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid. Disappointingly, John Heard will not make an appearance. Here we go again...
If you never saw the original "Sharknado," thankfully Vulture has put together everything you need to know in five helpful gifs (yes, that's Ian Ziering launching himself into a shark with a chainsaw).
"Sharknado 2: The Second One" will be on Syfy in July.
