"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn knew that he needed the right voice behind Groot, a superhero who also happens to be an anthropomorphic talking tree with a signature (and solitary) catchphrase: "I am Groot."
And while audiences have yet to hear star Vin Diesel utter those words, Gunn revealed that the actor worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring Groot to believable life, leaving the director "astounded." In an interview with the Pointless Podcast, Gunn said that filmmakers initially struggled to find the perfect fit for the character.
"All of the 'I am Groots' that were earlier voices didn't sound very good at all, they sounded like sh-t. It just didn't really work," Gunn told the podcast. "Then Vin came in and in one day, laid down all these 'I am Groot' tracks, and he's a perfectionist. He made me explain to him with every 'I am Groot,' exactly what he was saying. ... Then Vin would sit there and he would do it, and he would do it again and again and again, and his voice is so rich and so beautiful and he really opened up and was this character. It was amazing when we first put that voice in there how much the character changed and how much he influenced the character."
Diesel's dedication to the character -- who he also portrayed through motion capture technology, just like his costar Bradley Cooper did for fellow Guardian Rocket Raccoon -- is impressive, especially considering Groot's dialogue consists solely of one line uttered in different inflections. Now, audiences will have to see for themselves if Groot sounds as good as he looks.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" opens August 1.
