exodus trailerRidley Scott is channeling Cecil B. DeMille in this first trailer for "Exodus: Gods and Kings," the Old Testament saga about Moses and Rhamses. It looks epic, if epic weren't a word rendered nearly meaningless from use by overenthusiastic bloggers and/or "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," but what else can you say about the story of Moses leading the slaves out of Egypt?

The budget for spray tanning Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton alone must have been astronomical! Edgerton is barely recognizable as a sort of 20th century Yul Brynner in his get-up, because if you want to cast someone who looks like an Egyptian king, it makes total sense to cast a white Australian dude. At least Bale could sort of pass for Semitic. (In any case, he'd be welcome at our synagogue any day.) In any case, Sigourney Weaver looks awesome and terrifying as Queen Tuya, a role made famous by Irene Martin in DeMille's "Ten Commandments." At least there aren't any fake beards.

This isn't the first time Ridley Scott has tried his hand at historical epics, if, in fact, the word epic hadn't been rendered nearly meaningless by "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." It seems like he gets a bee in his bonnet about making every few years. His first was "1492: Conquest of Paradise" in 1992, then "Gladiator" in 2000, followed by "Kingdom of Heaven" in 2005. Will "Exodus: Gods and Kings" be any more successful than "Kingdom of Heaven" or, say, "Noah"? Or will it be a really expensive vanity project? We'll find out this December when it hits theaters.
