Fans of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" book series will have to wait until next year to see how successful a film adaptation will be, but one cable network executive thinks the novels would have been better served -- and their racy sex scenes more faithfully recreated -- as a TV series.

While speaking with reporters Friday at the Television Critics Association press tour, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht revealed that he had pitched Universal, the studio behind the movie, an idea to make the books into a television show instead. Albrecht envisioned dedicating one season to each of the series's three books, allowing for fewer plot points to be cut, as well as more graphic sexual content than the aiming-for-an-R-rating flick will be allowed to depict.

Comparing the E.L. James novels to upcoming Starz series "Outlander," based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon (which have some sexual content, though it's much tamer than "Fifty Shades"'s S&M), Albrecht said that it just made sense to adapt book series into television shows, which have more time to tell the story. ("Outlander" will dedicate one season each to the novels in Gabaldon's series, just like Albrecht wanted to do with "Fifty Shades.")

"If you read the ['Outlander'] book, this could only be a series," Albrecht told reporters. "I'm the guy who called up Universal and said, 'I'll get you three years on the air as a series-let's just do a "Fifty Shades" of Grey series.' You don't have to worry about box office, you don't have to worry about a rating, you can tell the story the right way. ... But movie people think things should be movies, and authors think things should be movies. Because up until recently, movies have been the Tiffany jeweled crown. And certainly from what I see you people writing, that seems to be changing."

Sadly for Starz, "Fifty Shades" is destined for the big screen. Devotees will found out on February 13, 2015, when the movie hits theaters, whether they should be sad, too.
