Jack Bauer almost didn't live another day on last night's finale of "24."

Executive producer Howard Gordon told Deadline that they seriously considered killing off the iconic main character, played by Kiefer Sutherland, in "24: Live Another Day."

"We certainly tried out a lot of different endings and we rearranged the furniture every which way in the room," Gordon admitted. "So we knew what it looked like for other characters to have met with different ends and we tried them all on, up to and including Jack himself. This has always been a show that is really about the days and the life of this man and no day is probably as intense as a person's last day. So killing Jack was something that was intriguing to us all but it had to be done just right. And that didn't present itself to us."

Instead, the show killed off Audrey (Kim Raver), Jack's sometime love interest first introduced in season 4. Audrey has been through hell and back -- her (awful) husband was killed, boyfriend Jack was presumed dead (then discovered to be alive), she was taken hostage, and on and on.

Audrey meeting her end via an assassin's bullet was merely the final terrible thing in a string of terrible things that happened to her. "There was something about Audrey's tragic life that it would have felt too saccharine not to go this way," Gordon said.

"I will tell you, we even considered a happy ending. But '24' is ultimately a tragic story."

So, Jack survives to live yet another day. Will we get to watch him yell "dammit" once more?

As Gordon teased, "I would say 'never say never' about anything."
