It's hard to imagine BBC's "Sherlock" without Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, or "Risky Business" without Tom Cruise, but celebrities have to audition before they land iconic roles -- and they're not always successful.
That's the takeaway from a new YouTube video that compiles dozens of audition tapes from some of Hollywood's biggest names, including the aforementioned trio, as well as Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr., Emma Stone, and Robert De Niro. We see Lindsay Lohan don a fake British accent for her "Parent Trap" tryout, while a babyfaced Scarlett Johansson reads for a role in "Jumanji" (which ultimately went to Kirsten Dunst).
Former Disney Channel starlets Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus are also included, auditioning for their breakout series "Wizards of Waverly Place" and "Hannah Montana," respectively, while current "Game of Thrones" stars Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner read for the roles of the Stark sisters. Aaron Paul and Hugh Laurie make their cases for "Breaking Bad" and "House," and Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill take us to a galaxy far, far away with their "Star Wars" auditions.
Most of these clips have been passed around before (including Rachel McAdams's "Notebook" audition, with which she was recently surprised during a "Today" taping), but it's cool to see them all collected in one place, and with the case of some who didn't land the part, wonder what might have been. Check it out below.
