BRITAIN-ART-CINEMA-THE COUNSELORAs "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" preps to begin production early next year, the film may have landed an Oscar-winning actor to play its main villain.

TheWrap reports that Javier Bardem is in talks to play antagonist Captain Brand in the fifth "Pirates" flick. Christoph Waltz was previously rumored to be in the running for the part, but according to TheWrap, an offer is currently out to Bardem.

Variety also confirmed that Bardem is currently in talks with Disney about the flick.

TheWrap notes that the actor may have been swayed to join "Pirates 5" by his wife, Penelope Cruz, who starred in the fourth flick in the franchise, "On Stranger Tides." In addition to that personal connection, Bardem also reportedly is eager to work with "Dead Men Tell No Tales" directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, after being impressed by their work on the feature "Kon-Tiki."

Bardem would be a new addition to a sea of familiar faces set to rejoin the "Pirates" fold. Johnny Depp is a lock to return as Captain Jack Sparrow, while rumored returning actors also include Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Stephen Graham, and Keith Richards. After sitting out the fourth flick, Orlando Bloom is also considering reprising his role.

Production on "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" is set to begin in Australia in February.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
