In news that brings Method acting to a new level, genealogists in the UK are reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch is distantly related to the famous code-breaker he plays in "The Imitation Game." According to the folks at Ancestry.com, Cumberbatch and Alan Turing are 17th cousins thanks to John Beaufort, the first Earl of Somerset. Beaufort was born around 1373, which makes the reach of this particular family chart particularly impressive. Of course, we'd expect nothing less from anything even vaguely related to Cumberbatch.
Ancestry UK's Miriam Silverman said, "It's amazing to think that that when stepping into the role of Alan Turing, he would not only be portraying a world class code breaker but a real life relation." It just so happens that "The Imitation Game" opens Friday, November 14, in the UK. How convenient is that?
Cumberbatch's portrayal of the tortured genius in "The Imitation Game" has already stirred talk of a Best Actor Oscar nom. The film opens in the US on November 28. Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, and Charles Dance also appear in the biopic.
