Put your paws up, Little Monsters, it's official: Lady Gaga has booked the lead in "A Star Is Born," opposite Bradley Cooper, who will co-star and make his directorial debut with the film. Gaga will compose and perform new music for the movie, which follows an ingenue singer whose star rises at the same time that her lover-mentor's star falls.

Mother Monster was said to be circling the role back in June, but now Deadline has confirmation, saying Gaga was the star Cooper wanted ... after things didn't work out with Beyoncé.Warner Bros. President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman said, in a statement to Deadline:

"For those of us lucky enough to watch him work as an actor and producer, it has been clear that Bradley would make this transition to director. We are honored that he is doing it, here, at his home—Warner Bros.—and with Lady Gaga as a collaborator and co-star. The world is in for a treat as these great artists craft an all new vision of 'A Star is Born.'"

"All new vision" sounds like fans shouldn't expect a repeat of the 1937 film, or the 1954 film, or the 1976 one.

Production is scheduled to begin early next year in California.
