He's single, she's single — and they're super close. So, could Alex Karev and Meredith Grey turn from friends to lovers on "Grey's Anatomy"?

"Anything is possible," star Justin Chambers told TV Line. But he thinks of them as "as siblings that care very much for each other."

"Personally, I don't see that [happening] right now. I think it would be kind of strange," he added, echoing co-star Ellen Pompeo's previous statements and dashing the hopes of Meredith/Alex fans everywhere.

Alex's fate — whether he was going to prison for beating up intern Andrew DeLuca — was revealed at the end of last week's episode, when Meredith found him napping in her bed instead of behind bars. But how did Alex get off the hook? Chambers said that will be revealed via a flashback in the first 10 minutes of this week's episode.

And though Alex and Meredith may not be hooking up anytime soon, that doesn't mean a reconciliation with Jo (Camilla Luddington). "We're steering clear of each other," he said. "But I think he has a lot of empathy for her, coming from an abusive relationship [with her MIA husband]."
