Exciting as the return of "Twin Peaks" is, the latest teaser brought a sad reminder: Not all of the series' stars are still with us.
Miguel Ferrer appears as his FBI agent character Albert Rosenfield in the preview, released Thursday, in what turned out to be his final TV role. With the actor having died in January after battling throat cancer, the scene underscores the loss of a cast member who had been with the series from the beginning. Ferrer played Rosenfield for two seasons, plus appeared in the 1992 film "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me."
Heartbreaking as it is, we're glad the series was revived while the actor was still alive. Seeing Rosenfield and his FBI colleague Cole Gordon (David Lynch) together again was long overdue.
Many fans noted Ferrer's appearance and turned to Twitter as an outlet for their emotions.
Just seeing Miguel Ferrer makes me cry. I am so glad he was able to be in season 3 before he passed. pic.twitter.com/Teg8oIgcDr— best of twin peaks (@twinpeakstuff) May 11, 2017

Reminder that there is apparently "a lot" of Miguel Ferrer in the new season of Twin Peaks, and that sometimes we are blessed.— Andrew Ihla 🦉 (@AndrewIhla) May 11, 2017

So good to see Miguel Ferrer properly in this, I'm hopeful and confident that it will be worthy of his last efforts. https://t.co/0wOiBFE1Cf
@ThatsOurWaldo Best so far. Great to see Miguel Ferrer as Albert, and looks like the interior of the Great Northern hasn't changed much!— Andrew Francis (@versio1n) May 11, 2017
Ferrer's death was one of a series of recent losses for "Twin Peaks" fans; it was followed by the deaths of Michael Parks in May and Warren Frost in February. Luckily, the revival is the perfect way to remember their lives and work. "Twin Peaks" returns May 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime.
