"The Good Doctor" will continue treating patients for another year.

ABC has renewed the freshman medical drama for Season 2. The show stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a brilliant, autistic surgeon who moves to a the prestigious St. Bonaventure Hospital. The staff are initially skeptical, but his mentor Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) challenges their prejudices and Shaun's exceptional work ends up winning them over.

"The Good Doctor" was an instant success for ABC. It's the most-watched first-year series for the network in 13 years. At one point, it was the most-watched drama on television. Highmore also earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

"'The Good Doctor's' message of inclusiveness resonates with our viewers and is a hallmark of what we aim to accomplish here at ABC," ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in the renewal announcement Wednesday. "This series has quickly joined the zeitgeist and broken records in the competitive television landscape. We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Shaun Murphy will be back for another season."
