"I thought we were closer than most fathers and sons," an anguished Steve Carell tells Timothée Chalamet in a new trailer for "Beautiful Boy."

The trailer delves deeper into the fractured relationship between meth addict Nic Sheff and his father, David. The latter struggles with disappointment and fear as he faces the reality of what his son has become versus his hopes and dreams.

"I had such grand plans," David says mournfully. "He’d graduate from college, do something amazing. Now I just want him to not die."

The movie is based on the memoir by David Sheff and the trailer provides glimpses of the raw, emotional scenes between father and son. The film received rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival, particularly for the performances by Carell and Chalamet. Both will undoubtedly be part of the Oscar conversation this winter.

"Beautiful Boy" also stars Amy Ryan and Maura Tierney, and opens in theaters October 12.
