The first glimpse at the movie adaptation of Eoin Colfer's popular book "Artemis Fowl" is here.

Disney released a teaser trailer on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and it introduces the titular character (Ferdia Shaw), a 12-year-old genius who goes digging into his father's disappearance, and the Fairy People he discovers. We get a brief look at their secret world, plus a brief history of the hidden race.

"Our world has never been in more danger," says a Fairy in the trailer. "Human greed is what drove us underground all those years ago -- to escape from your rapacious appetite. I warn you, boy: You are not prepared for the truth behind what you seek. Now you will believe, Artemis Fowl."

The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh from a screenplay by Conor McPherson. It stars Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, and Nonzo Anozie. Josh Gad, and Judi Dench are also part of the cast.

"Artemis Fowl" is scheduled to open Aug. 9.
