IFC Films dropped the trailer for "Charlie Says" on Tuesday, offering a new look at the gruesome crimes of Charles Manson and the people who followed him.

The upcoming drama centers on three particular members of the Manson Family: Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón). The trailer introduces the trio of young women, who were jailed for participating in horrific murders. In spite of the prevailing view that they're monsters, grad student Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever) is brought in to try to rehabilitate them.

The trailer shows the women behind bars as well as their lives prior to incarceration. It offers glimpses at how Manson (Matt Smith) brought them into the cult, and then hints at their later struggle to reconcile their beliefs and actions.

"We did what we had to do, right?" Patricia asks Leslie in the trailer.

The film is directed by Mary Harron ("American Psycho") from a script written by Guinevere Turner.

"Charlie Says" hits theaters May 10.
