When Sophie Rubin (Maria Schell) sees a TV interview with Alexander Scherbatov (Paul Scofield) -- one of Sigmund Freud's last living patients -- she decides she has to meet him, being a patient of Freud herself. Traveling from New York City to Vienna, Sophie meets Alexander at his apartment, where the two compare notes on their psychoanalysis.
