1. New Orleans
Trevor McDonald sets out on an epic journey through the heartland of the USA following the course of its most famous and important river - the Mississippi. He begins in the Deep South and discovers how the legacy from the days of slavery still plays a part in life there today. He attends a New Orleans jazz funeral and makes a poignant visit to some rare surviving plantation slave quarters.
2. Memphis
Trevor McDonald looks at the Mississippi's influence on the 20th century as he meets Hollywood star Morgan Freeman and discovers why Morgan returned to his roots in Mississippi after 40 years away. In Memphis, Trevor visits the place where Martin Luther King was assassinated, and he meets a former girlfriend of Elvis Presley who gives him a candid portrait of the King.
3. St Louis
Trevor McDonald takes the pulse of America as he travels through the Midwest. His first stop is St Louis where he meets one of America's richest baseball teams. On an island in the Mississippi he visits the biggest weapons factory in the US, and in Minneapolis he discovers that the recession isn't affecting business at the enormous Mall of America.
