Critic Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times | Roger EbertAdd Critic to Favorites

This happens in 1961, when 16-year-old girls were a great deal less knowing than they are now. Yet the movie isn't shabby or painful, but romantic and wonderfully entertaining.Read the full review

This is a performance, and a film, to cherish for this year and always.Read the full review

Wall Street Journal | Joe MorgensternAdd Critic to Favorites

This tale of an English schoolgirl's hard-won wisdom is thrilling --for the radiance of Carey Mulligan's Jenny, who's wonderfully smart and perilously tender; for the grace of Lone Scherfig's direction, and the brilliance of Nick Hornby's screenplay.Read the full review

Headlines

  • Nominated helmers run the gamut

11/25/09 Eight nominations: film, director, screenplay, actress (Katie Jarvis), supporting actress (Kierston Wareing), supporting actor (Michael Fassbender), most promising newcomer (Jarvis), technical achievement for cinematography (Robbie Ryan).  |  Variety
  • Box Office: Almodovar’s Best Opener; “Precious” Shines In Shadow of “New Moon” (UPDATED)

    11/23/09 On 27 screens, the well-received black comedy - which stars Nicolas Cage as a corrupt, drug-addicted cop - grossed a decent $257,000, averaging $9,519.  |  indieWIRE
  • Place plays a power role

11/18/09 International locations have played a role in the stories of countless Oscar-winning pics.  |  Variety
  • Pics re-examine the ’60s

11/18/09 When Carey Mulligan signed on to play the sophisticated English schoolgirl in "An Education," she immediately had to set her friends straight on what kind of '60s movie she was making.  |  Variety
  • Multiple nominations don't scare studios

11/18/09 Many might say that having multiple potential Oscar nominees from the same film competing in the same acting category is a curse in blessing's clothing.  |  Variety
  • Shallow pool for Oscar's actress contenders

11/16/09 "An Education" director Lone Scherfig recently lamented, good-naturedly, that she was tired of producers thinking of her for stereotypically female projects.  |  The Hollywood Reporter
  • The Contenders

11/15/09 With 10 Oscar best picture nominations suddenly up for grabs, a much broader range of films is part of the conversation this year.  |  Variety
  • Box Office: “Precious” Stuns With $100K Weekend Average

11/08/09 Debuting in "Preciouss shadow this weekend were two films that found nice numbers on sole New York screen debuts. Frederick Wiseman's doc "La Danse," which explores the Paris Opera Ballet, sold out all of its shows at New York's Film Forum over the weekend, grossing $14,000. That took its total to $21,220 since opening Wednesday. Due to the heavy demand, a second screen will be added at the Film Forum next Friday - a very rare occurrence at a theater with little flexibility due to their calendar programming. Since the grosses were only limited by the number of screenings and seats. The nearly three hour running time limited it to three screenings per day in a 150 seat theater. But, the theater reported that the Friday shows sold out hours in advance, and the first two shows on Saturday sold out before the first show even began. Perhaps not "Precious" impressive, but certainly a feat in its own right.  |  indieWIRE
  • Indie Roundup: 'Splinterheads,' 'Ghost World,' 'Devil'

11/04/09 Amiable and pleasant, Splinterheads revolves around a romance between Justin ( Thomas Middleditch ), an aimless small town dreamer, and Galaxy ( Rachael Taylor ), a gorgeous grifter who (literally) bumps into him at a gas station.  |  Cinematical.com
  • Box Office: “Devil,” “Saints” and “Broncos” In Hallowe’en Opener Battle

11/01/09 While "Michael Jackson's This Is It" amassed a stunning $101 million worldwide (though only a somewhat disappointing $21.3 million of that came from North America), three specialty openers attempted to get folks into cinemas in the midst of their Hallowe'en festivities.  |  indieWIRE
