Made an outcast by her family and her boyfriend because of an unwanted pregnancy, Marlene Chambers (Patty Duke) takes refuge in an abandoned seaside house. She is not there long before black attorney Charlie Roberts (Al Freeman Jr.), falsely accused of a murder, also moves in. Neither is excited about the arrangement, and at first their relationship is fraught with hostility and prejudice. Over time, however, they are able to forge a friendship based on mutual understanding.
