This version of the classic turtles is based heavily on the original comic book, which is actually a parody of 80's era society and pop-culture. It also has a few elements from the 80's TV show mixed in to make it more understandable for the fans of the show. The movie is low budget and very corny, but the makers did a very good job given the finances and limited technology of the time. Despite its limited resources, it went on to become one of the most successful and highest grossing independent movies of all time. If you can get past the main characters being 4 mutated turtles, and the main villain wearing a costume that now self respecting ninja or samurai would think of, then you'll find that it's actually a good movie. This is a cult classic that every TMNT fan needs to see.
