Well, this must have been awkward: according to TMZ, in a deposition during Tom Cruise's $50 million libel lawsuit against a magazine, Cruise revealed that Scientology was a chief reason Katie Holmes left him. He also said Holmes took their young daughter, Suri, with her.
According to the report, "Cruise squirmed in his chair as the lawyer for the magazine repeatedly asked if Katie fled their marriage because of the Church." Then things got really weird. The lawyer asked whether or not Holmes had "left you in part to protect Suri from Scientology." Cruise answered back: "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."
Cruise then confirmed that Suri was no longer part of the Church of Scientology, triggering a collective sigh of relief from concerned parents the world over. The crux of the $50 million lawsuit is an article that claimed Cruise abandoned Suri, something that the deposition doesn't strongly deny. In it, Cruise admitted that he only saw his daughter for 10 days between June 18, 2012 and Thanksgiving, 2012, the time following his divorce from Holmes. Another part of the deposition was spent squabbling about whether or not Suri was visibly upset by her father's absence, something that Cruise strongly denies.
Cruise has been a member of the Church of Scientology for decades now and has become one of its most vocal advocates, despite many seeing it as a fringe-y, potentially harmful organization. Rumors ran rampant about the Church's involvement in both Cruise's split from Holmes and the immediate aftermath, which reportedly saw Cruise hunting for a suitable replacement.
