In the story, an old man called Usman, dies of cancer which was caused by the toxic waste in the village water supply. Usman's son Nirmal, identifies the cause of the pollution as the large chemical factory which his father had been campaigning against most of his life. Disturbed by his father's death, Nirmal takes refuge in the fables and images his father had left him with, during their wanderings in the village.
