'Mary Queen of Scots' Stars Only Have One Scene Together: 'We Were Blubbering Like Idiots'
If only the real-life queens could've just hugged it out.
Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie star, respectively, as "Mary Queen of Scots" and Queen Elizabeth I in the upcoming drama, but they only have one scene together.
That's still more than real life, since the royal cousins never actually met. Creative license!
Filming was structured so that Margot Robbie filmed her scenes as Elizabeth first, and her meeting with Ronan's Mary Stuart was saved until her last day. That was Ronan's first day as Queen Mary.
Ronan explained to EW that the actresses love each other in real life, and wanted to hang out, but for the sake of the characters they didn't want to see either other until that one pivotal meeting.
That meeting turned out to be more emotional than they expected:
"We were blubbering like idiots. We just held each other for ages, we wouldn’t let go. We were like” -- [EW noted that Ronan lowered her voice to demonstrate their sobbing] -- “‘Huohooouuughh.’” Ronan laughed. “I’ve never experienced anything like that."
And even though the story is of a deadly historical rivalry, Margot Robbie said it's actually a love story as well:
"They have this sisterhood, this love for each other, but the love is complicated by the fact that each one’s survival threatens the other. It’s a love story between these two characters. A very, very complicated love story."
"Mary Queen of Scots" was directed by Josie Rourke and also stars Jack Lowden, Guy Pearce, David Tennant, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, Martin Compston, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and Brendan Coyle.
It'll open in theaters December 7th.
