Ling Jiushi, a VR game designer, decided to resign due to the frustrations at work. A beta game named "Spirit Realm" helped him forget his worries. Just when he was struggling to find the complete version of the game, he unexpectedly received a game disc sent from abroad. After a car accident, he found himself in a corridor with twelve iron doors. Entering through one of the doors, a mysterious person helped him escape from the clutches of wolves in the forest and snow-capped mountains and welcomed him to the world behind the doors.

Ling Jiushi helped the injured mysterious person enter the inn in the village to take a rest. He learned from a man named Xiong Qi that in order to leave this game world, one must solve puzzles and find the key. The mysterious person claimed to be named Ruan Baijie. He warned Ling Jiushi not to tell his real name, but Ling Jiushi didn't listen. That night, a player was killed by a woman in white. Everyone learned that the cause of his death was violating the taboos inside the door. In order to find the key, everyone agreed to the village head's request to ask a carpenter to make a coffin, which should be related to the key.

On the way to the carpenter's house, Ling Jiushi noticed that every household in the village had a well. Originally, these wells were the entrances to the caves dug to avoid wolf disasters. But now a monster had emerged, so they had no choice but to seal up the wellheads. To make coffins, the carpenter asked everyone to go up the mountain to cut down trees. The innkeeper reminded the three of them that carrying the trees together would save their strength. Unexpectedly, this move attracted the attack of a female monster.
