The story begins in 1979, as Kathy dreams of becoming a music journalist after being told she is too ugly to be an actress. Meanwhile, her best friend Mary is thrilled to score a date with an 18-year-old man who can get her into gigs and the pub.

Kathy excitedly prepares to go to a secret gig at a pub, but suffers a setback when her tape recorder gets smashed. Meanwhile, Mary and Larry mark their three-week anniversary in slightly inappropriate fashion, and Pretty Nun and Angry Nun argue about actresses.
