From This Day Forward synopsis

Discharged after World War II, soldier Bill Cummings (Mark Stevens) tells a sympathetic unemployment office worker his story. In 1938, Bill marries Martha (Joan Fontaine) despite his fears of being unable to provide for her. When Bill loses his factory job, the newlyweds live off Martha's salary while Bill bounces from one job to another. When Bill is arrested on obscenity charges for unwittingly drawing illustrations for a pornographic book, Bill and Martha's marital tensions increase.
