If only Derek could just come back to life...

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 ended with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) getting closer to Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) only for his lost love Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) to return. In Season 14, he chose to be with Megan and start a new life in Los Angeles. So ... there goes Meredith's post-Derek love interest.

Fans just want Meredith to be happy. Well, they really want Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) back, but that's not going to happen. So Meredith will either find a new love or stay single -- which is definitely fulfilling enough when you're a superstar surgeon with adorable kids and amazing friends. (Apparently Alex Karev is out of the question as a love interest because Jolex is happening.)

According to TVLine's Ask Ausiello spoilers, Meredith will not stay single for long; she'll get a new man later this season -- and he's another doctor:

Question: I'm still perplexed as to why Grey's Anatomy gave Martin Henderson the heave-ho. Any intel on what's next for Meredith now that Nathan is no longer in the picture? —Tammy

Ausiello: For the record, I'm a bit perplexed, too. "Merthan" was growing on me. The good news: Grey's remains committed to finding a new love for Mer. Sources confirm to me exclusively that the show is quietly searching for a fortysomething actor to play a major new love interest opposite Ellen Pompeo. Character details are sketchy, but I'm told the guy in question will be a doctor from a foreign country who is sexy, fiery, impulsive and passionate about medicine. He also shares something major in common with Mer in that one of his parents (in his case his pa) was/is a renowned surgeon.

A hot, fiery foreign doctor. Maybe DeLuca's sister should just make out with Meredith next. She's workin' her way through Grey Sloan, why not?

Seriously, though, Mer deserves some stability after 14 seasons of heartbreak. She lost her "person" in Cristina (who at least is still alive) and her sister Little Grey, and Derek. Now she doesn't even have Riggs.

Speaking of those ghosts from the past, though, we should expect to see or at least hear more about them in the next episode, Episode 7, airing November 19, since that's the big 300th episode milestone. And now we can look forward to meeting Mer's new man, who probably won't show up until sometime in 2018.

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 14 continues Thursdays on ABC.
