Ever since 2016, "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy has been saying the FX anthology series will do a "Coven" and "Murder House" crossover season, but it didn't look like it would happen for at least another year. Murphy is good at plot twists, though, and he announced Thursday that the upcoming Season 8 is the much-anticipated crossover.

"The Coven/Murder House AHS crossover season won't be happening next year...because it's happening THIS YEAR," he tweeted. "AHS #8 WITCHES RULE THIS SEPTEMBER."

Fans hadn't seen it coming, especially considering Murphy highlighted in the past what a complicated undertaking it was. In the wake of his announcement, they're dealing with their shock on Twitter, and it's a mix of immense surprise and excitement.

So far, we don't know which of the show's stars from "Coven" and "Murder House" will return, but there are so many for Murphy to choose from. Some fans are lobbying hard for their favorites, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

"American Horror Story" Season 8 is set to premiere this September.
