The "Saw" franchise is getting a reboot. But that's not the surprising news — everything is getting rebooted these days. It's who's doing it.

It's Chris Rock.

Yes, the comedian is teaming up with Lionsgate to make a "Saw" spinoff.

“I’ve been a fan of ‘Saw’ since the first film in 2004,” Rock said. “I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”

The "Saw" movies revolve around John Kramer aka the Jigsaw Killer, who creates death traps for victims to test their moral characters.

The franchise has been extremely successful, generating $1 billion worldwide. The most recent installment was 2017's "Jigsaw."

The new project is described as a re-imagining and a spinoff and has a release date of October 23, 2020.

Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, said, "When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in."

He added, "This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous ‘Saw’ films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”

Rock is best known for his stand-up. His most recent special, "Tamborine," debuted on Netflix last year. As an actor, he appeared opposite Adam Sandler in the Netflix comedy "The Week Of." Next, he'll star in Season 4 of FX's "Fargo."
