Marvel TV shows "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage" were axed over at Netflix, but "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." just got renewed for a 7th season.

The key difference in their fates, perhaps, as Disney prepares to launch its own streaming service, Disney+: "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs on Disney-owned ABC.

That's a lot of confidence in "S.H.I.E.L.D.," especially since Season 6 doesn't debut until next summer. Both seasons will be only 13 episodes, according to Marvel.com.

Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen were actually expecting that Season 5 would be the series' last.

As Tancharoen told EW in March, they wrote the Season 5 finale to serve as a potential series finale as well: "That’s how we’ve ended every season because, whenever we’ve come to the end of all the seasons past, we go into that mostly not knowing until the very last minute, so we’re basically doing the same thing to close out Season 5. It can fit well as a possible series finale, and it can fit well as just another season’s end."

Instead, the agents will be around at least through 2020.
