The ocean is as brutal as it is beautiful, as "The Perfect Storm" and "All Is Lost" and "White Squall" have shown before.

Now, we've got another harrowing sea journey in "Adrift." The first trailer debuted today, starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as Tami and Richard, a couple who meet and fall in love in Tahiti. He's a sailor, she's an adventure seeker, and so they're offered a chance to take a yacht to California, they dive right in.

But then a huge hurricane hits and cripples their boat. Claflin is also badly injured, which leaves Woodley to find a way to sail the boat to Hawaii. With no hope of rescue, it's their only chance to survive.

The movie is based on the real Tami's account of the ordeal in 1983. It's directed by Baltasar Kormákur, no stranger to terrifying tales of man vs. nature, since he helmed 2016's "Everest."

"Adrift" opens in theaters June 1.
