Fox may have said farewell to "American Idol," but it apparently isn't done with reality singing competition shows.

The network is developing a possible "Idol" challenger, Variety reports. The idea comes from Israeli producer and distributor Armorza Formats, and the series' working title is "The Final Four." (That will reportedly change so as to avoid confusion with the NCAA tournaments.) The show has an interesting format: It begins with four finalists who must defend their spot against new competitors.

With the tagline, "We start with the best and only get better," there are certainly unique elements. For example, viewers would be able to challenge the finalists through an app. That would be a departure from "Idol" and its weeks of auditions.

With ABC rebooting "Idol," Fox is in need of a new alternative. "The Final Four" (or whatever it ends up being called) seems promising. It will be interesting to see how it compares to "Idol," especially now that the veteran series is getting updated.
