Schmidt is getting his "Crime" on.

Max Greenfield, who plays the outrageous Schmidt on "New Girl," is joining the cast of FX's "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story." Creator Ryan Murphy broke the news on Instagram, posting a photo of Greenfield on the set. The actor confirmed the news on Twitter.

Murphy did not elaborate on who Greenfield is playing, but he is pictured standing next to Darren Criss, who plays serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

"The Assassination of Gianni Versace" is the third season of "American Crime Story." The second, about Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, is also in production at the same time.

Edgar Ramirez stars as the slain fashion designer, while Penelope Cruz is his sister, Donatella Versace. Ricky Martin is on board as Gianni's lover, Antonio D'Amico.

Both Season 2 and Season 3 are expected to premiere sometime in 2018 on FX.
