New Line's upcoming "Sopranos" prequel movie is still a go, and "The Many Saints of Newark" officially has a release date.

The Alan Taylor-directed film is slated to open Sept. 25, 2020, Deadline reports. It will debut more than 21 years after the acclaimed HBO crime drama first aired but be set in the 1960s. The story involves younger versions of "Sopranos" characters, including Tony Soprano, who will be played by Michael Gandolfini, the son of original actor James Gandolfini. Other cast members include Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, and John Magaro.

The plot is largely being kept under wraps. The studio has, however, shared that "The Many Saints of Newark" takes place in the era of the Newark riots, which saw a series of destructive and deadly clashes between African-Americans and Italian-Americans in the area. "The Sopranos" creator David Chase, who returned to co-produce the film as well as pen the script with Lawrence Konner, previously told Deadline that he "was interested in Newark and life in Newark at that time."

A previous version of this article mistakenly referred to the film as "Newark." It has been updated to use the title "The Many Saints of Newark."
