Congratulations -- or maybe ¡Felicitaciones! -- are in order for Mexican film director, screenwriter, and producer Guillermo del Toro.

He earned his first Best Director Oscar for "The Shape of Water," which led the pack of 2018 nominees with 13 nominations.

Del Toro was expected to win, after previous awards show wins in the Best Director category, but it was still a competitive group to beat. Here are all of the Oscar nominees in that category:

Best Director

  • "Dunkirk," Christopher Nolan
  • "Get Out," Jordan Peele
  • "Lady Bird," Greta Gerwig
  • "Phantom Thread," Paul Thomas Anderson
  • "The Shape of Water," Guillermo del Toro

Del Toro had previously been nominated for the 2006 film "Pan's Labyrinth."

Del Toro was also part of the group that headed over to the theater next door to the Oscars to surprise fans and give them treats.

It was a big night for Mexico -- from director Del Toro's empowering speech as an immigrant to "Coco" winning Best Animated Feature. The people of Mexico got a shout-out for their "endlessly beautiful culture and traditions."
