"Slumdog Millionaire" star Freida Pinto has joined the ensemble of Netflix’s adaptation of "Hillbilly Elegy," directed by Ron Howard.

The movie is based on J.D. Vance’s bestselling memoir that follows three generations of an Appalachian family.

Also joining the cast, 13-year-old newcomer Owen Asztalos and 77-year-old veteran Bo Hopkins, whose films include Sam Peckinphah's "The Wild Bunch" and "The Getaway." Hopkins also appeared in Howard's 1973 classic "American Graffiti."

Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Haley Bennett and Gabriel Basso will star in the film, which is told from the POV of youngest family member Vance, a Yale law student forced to return to his hometown.

Pinto will presumably be playing Usha Chilukuri, one of Vance's fellow students at Yale Law School, whom he ends up marrying.

She recently starred in Andy Serkis's "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" and Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups," as well as the TV series "The Path" and "Guerrilla."
