Spring Movies 2017: 18 Must-See Blockbusters, Comedies, and More

Moviefone
March 1, 2017 - 1 min read

Spring is basically pre-summer movie season. With blockbusters like "Logan," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Fate of the Furious" opening this time of year, Hollywood is practically daring you not to give them all your money. Best put these movies on your radar.

'Logan' (March 3)

He's baaaack. Hugh Jackman returns for his third and final Wolverine movie. This time around, it's the year 2029 and he's faced with caring for an aging Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and helping a mysterious and extraordinary young mutant (Dafne Keen.)

'Table 19' (March 3)

Face it -- we all know about that one sad table at weddings that seats the guests who were reluctantly invited. "Table 19" stars Anna Kendrick as one of those unfortunate guests. She appears alongside a funny ensemble of rejected seat mates, including Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson, and Stephen Merchant.

'Kong: Skull Island' (March 10)

King Kong kicks off his own shared universe with this much-anticipated film. In "Skull Island," a group of soldiers and explorers, including Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, head to an uncharted island in the Pacific -- only to discover they are stuck in a place home to Kong and lots of murder-y monsters.

'Personal Shopper' (March 10)

Fashion and ghosts? Color us intrigued... Kristen Stewart stars in this French psychological thriller about a high-end personal shopper in Paris who begins communicating with the dead after the death of her twin brother. Director Olivier Assayas, who Stewart previously worked with on "Clouds of Sils Maria," took home the Best Director Award at Cannes for the film.

'Beauty and the Beast' (March 17)

It's a tale as old as time... Bright young Belle (Emma Watson) is taken prisoner in a magical castle by a princely Beast (Dan Stevens) and learns to see beyond his frightening appearance to get to know who he truly is inside. Bill Condon directs this live-action retelling of the beloved animated Disney classic.

'Power Rangers' (March 24)

All your '90s TV reboot dreams are coming true, folks. "Power Rangers" re-imagines the beloved franchise about five teens who join forces to save the world. In what looks to be an expert casting move, Elizabeth Banks appears as their evil alien nemesis, Rita Repulsa. It's morphin time, people!

'CHiPs' (March 24)

Dax Shepard and Michael Peña take on the roles of California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers Jon and Ponch in this wacky big-screen reboot of the classic 1970s/1980s NBC buddy cop series. Shepard also gets in the director's seat for the adaptation.

'Life' (March 24)

Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson team up for this horror/sci-fi flick about an International Space Station crew who discovers life on Mars. Daniel Espinosa ("Safe House") directs.

'The Boss Baby' (March 31)

Sure, he looks like a baby, but he wears a suit, carries a briefcase, and talks like a high-powered executive. It's up to his jealous 7-year-old brother to uncover that this bossy infant is actually on a top-secret mission. Alec Baldwin voices the title role in this DreamWorks Animation comedy.

'The Zookeeper's Wife' (March 31)

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, "The Zookeeper's Wife" centers on the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo who saved hundreds of lives in Nazi-occupied Poland during WWII by hiding refugees in animal cages. Jessica Chastain stars and Niki Caro ("Whale Rider") directs.

'Ghost in the Shell' (March 31)

Based on the popular Japanese manga and anime of the same name, "Ghost in the Shell" follows badass human/cyborg counter-terrorist commander the Major (Scarlett Johansson) as she battles new threats to AI technology.

'Free Fire' (March 31)

Chaos ensues when shots are fired at an arms deal meeting gone bad in this British thriller directed by Ben Wheatley. Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, and Armie Hammer headline this gritty, star-studded action flick.

'Smurfs: The Lost Village' (April 7)

The Smurfs are back with yet another movie, and this one is fully animated and 3D for your viewing pleasure. Smurfette and her pals Brainy, Clumsy, and Hefty are all here, with Demi Lovato voicing Smurfette.

'Going in Style' (April 7)

Zach Braff directs this remake of the 1979 heist comedy, about a group of longtime buddies who decide to knock off a bank. It stars a long list of Oscar-winning and nominated heavy-hitters like Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin.

'Sleight' (April 28)

In this gritty thriller, a gifted LA street magician-turned-drug-dealer (Jacob Latimore) must use his tricks to save his kidnapped sister. Early buzz on this below-the-radar release is surprisingly high -- here's hoping the hype is worth it.

'Gifted' (April 12)

And now, here's one so you can feel all the feels, guys. Single dad Frank (Chris Evans) battles his mother to retain custody of his genius seven-year-old niece (McKenna Grace) in this Marc Webb drama. Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer also star.

'Fate of the Furious' (April 14)

The gang is back for their eighth -- yes, eighth -- installment of the unstoppable franchise. This time, they've got a criminal mastermind in the form of Charlize Theron to contend with, when she corrupts Dom into turning on his "Furious" family. Need another reason to see this guaranteed hit? Helen Mirren joins in on the fun.

'The Circle' (April 28)

Emma Watson steps out of her Disney Princess gear for this dystopian thriller about a woman who lands a job at an elite tech company, only to get caught up in the scrutinizing and life-changing trappings of the digital age and its lack of privacy, freedom, and control. Tom Hanks stars as The Circle's CEO. The late Bill Paxton plays Watson's father.
