2046

A poetic film that mixes a future fantasy with present reality. A psychological study of a writer who works for a newspaper but also writes some... ion. He is a womanizer, incapable of committed love, but searches for such love. When he finds it in a woman willing to love him, he rejects her love, and when he tries to win love from a woman he loves, then she rejects him. He wants committed love, but is either incapable or afraid of love commitment. He writes a story, called 2046 (his hotel room number) about a future train that goes to the year 2046. The characters and plot in his 2046 story are based on himself and the women he has known in his past search for love.The film shifts back and forth from the 2046 story (on the future train with female androids) to present reality in the late 60's. It opens in the future fantasy where he is trying to find love (from past memory) and come back to the present reality. The movie then goes to the present (the past in relation to the fantasy future) where he goes with different women in a search for love he either rejects or can not win. This shift from a fantasy future of his story called 2046, to the present reality in the 60's (on which the fantasy future is based), occurs several times in the movie. The fact that the writer is not too upset over his failure to find a committed love demonstrates that he really doesn't want to find it - he is content with a series of sexual and friendship relationships with women, in spite of a desire at times for committed love.
