Very good dark comedy. Jack Black delivers and Shirley MaClaine was perfect. Great movie with outstanding performances by all.
I had never heard of it but went on $2 night and enjoyed it so much I rented it to show some friends. We are all old farts in our forties and thi nk he should have \"dumped out of the plane\" and kept his mouth shut.
The only reason I watched this movie was because Jack Black had the lead role. Unfortunately, it was by far one of the most boring movies I have seen all year. If not for a great performance by Black, it would be hands down two stars.
im am going to destroy this dvd so that there can not be be another victom
GIVE JACK BLACK AN OSCAR NOMONATION

Bernie is an interesting guy, but he doesn't make for very good company. Full Review

All those twangy, homespun observations interrupt and annotate the narrative until Black and MacLaine's scenes start to feel as trivial as reenactments on a true-crime TV show. Full Review

Interspersing "real" people with professional actors, Linklater creates a vivid, gossipy Greek chorus that serves as a kind of collective unreliable narrator -- an altogether appropriate stance given the moral gray zone the sweetly confounding Bernie inhabits. Full Review

This is writer-director Richard Linklater at his wry, whimsical best, and considering he was the filmmaker behind 1993's "Dazed and Confused," that makes the movie something of a milestone. Full Review

A surprisingly shapeless true-crime farce which never creates a convincing context for the odd relationship between a pious East Texas mortician and his sugar mama. Full Review
