Plot Summary
This documentary explores the birth of the gay pride movement in New York after the Stonewall riots of 1969 and the sexual freedom that resulted. It touches on many aspects of gay culture in the 1970s, including music, drugs and art, followed by the devastating impact that the onset of AIDS had on the homosexual community. Told through several interviews and archival material, it paints a picture of solidarity and positivity while exploring the sexuality of a relatively new movement.

  • Lovett's history is heavy on hedonism, but he does deliver a succinct perspective on this celebratory era - between the sad bookends of repression and loss. show more

  • Some four decades after the birth of the gay-rights movement, the excess and sexual abandon of gay life in the '70s seems more an aberration than an accurate picture of out-and-about gay life at the end of the 20th century. show more

  • Yet despite the retrospective sensationalism, Lovett's 70-minute documentary is a sobering anti-erotic cautionary tale. show more
