His (Anderson) abiding love for a vanished past, real and imagined, is at the core of The Grand Budapest Hotel. The thrill comes in watching as this rare talent gives his movie wings. show more

That perception of Fiennes and Gustave is central to the whole enterprise. Without it, the movie just breaks off and flies away. But with it, The Grand Budapest Hotel becomes something wonderful. show more

It's a mature, intricately layered visual delight. show more

Real life is not the movie's concern. Mr. Anderson's lovely confection — that's a pastry metaphor — keeps us smiling, and sometimes laughing out loud. Yet acid lurks in the cake's lowest layers. show more

Sustaining illusion with marvelous grace is, in a nutshell, exactly what Anderson is all about. show more

The result is a film almost too reliant on its players to push it through. show more

    Todd McCarthy The Hollywood Reporter

Constant lateral tracks, push-ins, whip-pans, camera moves timed to dialogue, title cards, chapter headings, miniatures, use of stop-action, fetishization of clothing and props, absurdist predicaments — all the techniques Anderson has honed over the years — are used to pinpoint effect here. show more

Anderson has abandoned a bit of his whimsical nature for the later portions of the film, but the film’s first half hour presents one of his most darling settings yet, until, of course, it all crumbles into murder, mayhem and bad renovations. show more

It’s quintessential Anderson... but also an unabashed entertainment. And that’s something to see. show more

I love this movie! Wonderful settings and photography angles throughout. It has a whimsical, fun flair about it as well as a heart rendering story of love and friendship.

Reminiscent of an old Zero Mostel comedy. I've never been a fan of Zero Mostel comedies; way too silly. I was disappointed.

A work of Art. Once upon a time movies were made without effects or affects. This film stands on writing, good directing, perfect actor character matching, and real acting. Ralph Fennes is Gustav. Presented as a "we just happened to have filmed a story in the unfolding". Will stand as a Classic

The best part of this movie was the senior discount!

Excellent, but I was surprised that it was darker than "Moonrise Kingdom". Cat lovers be prepared for a shock! I was amused that Zero as an old man was played by an actor about 6" taller than Zero as a young man!

I thought this movie was charming and very entertaining. The film style is fun, and I thought it was well done. Lots of cameos. If you liked the Best Marigold Hotel, you will like this.

I was very disappointed in this movie. I understood it was to be a comedy. While there might have been a chuckle or two, that was all. Can't even understand why it is in the theaters. Plus there was only 2 other people in the show and they didn't laugh either.

We all loved this movie. Agree with another review that it is for sophisticated taste! You have to like dry, quirky movies to like this one. Actors did a great job!! Seeing it again tonight

Clever, funny, enchanting film about serious topics but tongue-in-cheek and spectacular sets and scenes. Sophisticated taste.

Hard to describe this yawner of a movie. I expected so much more from the great cast. Maybe I just don't understand Wes Anderson.
