    Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle

To his credit, writer-director Jonathan Kasdan is sensitive and observant...But he doesn't know what he's talking about, not really, and though he structures the film around his areas of ignorance, that only works partially. show more

What gives In the Land of Women its singular charm is the charismatic Adam Brody, the star of TV's "The OC." show more

Despite its desperate attempts to appeal to every possible age group, there is no obvious audience for this movie. show more

Probably needed more originality than is on display. With an age-old cinema theme of a young man's maturation, it also needs to land female ticket-buyers but seems a lot like something women could find at home on the WE channel. show more

If you can get past the lips, Ryan gives a touching performance as a woman determined to battle her cancer while knowing life offers no guarantees except death -- an understanding no doubt sharpened by Kasdan's own experience battling Hodgkin's disease as a teenager. show more

Enjoyable for a movie in which pretty much nothing happens. show more

Manages to be entertaining, largely because of the appealing Adam Brody. show more

    Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune

Kasdan has inherited much of his father's surface skills; he knows how to round out a scene and keep things on story point. But In the Land of Women doesn't for a moment feel messy and chaotic where it counts. show more

    Wesley Morris Boston Globe

In the Land of Women sounds like a piece of cheap science fiction about the last man on earth. If you're the lovelorn mother and daughter in Jonathan Kasdan's first movie, a grating romantic drama, that's painfully close to the truth. show more

I watched this movie the other night and absolutely loved it. Meg Ryan was perfect as the mother across the way who befriends Carter and teaches him there is more to life than the emptyness that he had brought with him from LA. Olympia Dukakis was delightful as the grandmother. But the real dream of this movie was Adam Brody. He was perfectly cast and he was amazing in this movie. I never watched the OC very much but have always liked Adam. He was endearing as Carter. He took you along with him as you watched him come into his own through all of these women and their problems. Through their issues, he learned so much about life. Beautiful story. I loved it.

I was astounted by the majority of reviews by people who loved this movie. Personally, thought it was slow, often boring, and rather shallow. Felt that the director flirted with some important subjects but did not explore them in depth. Must have missed the "tremendous acting." Did find the main character, Carter, somewhat appealing. Olympia Dukakis' role was the best, poignantly sad.

I really enjoyed the movie. I was very surprised by the low ratings of the critics. Tremendous acting of all characters definitely carried this movie through the full story, but I was very drawn in and left very light-hearted, and I did not once feel a scene to be cheesey or too mushy. Never do I have the urge to go watch a movie a second time at the theater, but with this one I would make an exception. Who wants to go see it? I'll go again!

I went into this movie not expecting much. To my delight, I was highly entertained throughout the movie. Expecting a romance, I was thrilled that it didn't deliver. I thought the movie was hilarious and believe they marketed the movie wrong. I laughed so hard tears were rolling down my cheeks. Some scenes still had me laughing after it was over, and during a not so funny maybe tragic scene. I would recommend it for the grandma... you'll see why. It is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time.

I knew Meg Ryan couldn't be in a movie where she wasn't the romantic lead. Still the movie was watchable and enjoyable especially because Adam Brody leaps off the screen as the smart woman's sex object.
